Detach and Attach of Space - Elizabeth Schwaiger : Now & Now & Now

“It’s time for a black-owned gallery to inhabit the art world in New York in a really strong dynamic way,"¹

Nicola Vassell says. Born in Jamaica, she is a curator and an art insider who opened the first black women-owned gallery in New York's Chelsea neighborhood. Located at 138 10th Avenue, Chelsea, New York, NY, the Nicola Vassell Gallery presents Elizabeth Schwaiger’s solo exhibition ‘Now & Now & Now’ from January 11th to February 24th, 2024. Its dynamic perception of spreading profound discourse of art history and the future draws the world to engage with diversity.

Elizabeth Schwaiger (1985-), a research artist based in Brooklyn, NY, explores the
relationship between space and humanity through her meticulous use of refreshing colors. As a research artist, she captures the sentiment of spaces reflecting the owner themselves – while we sleep, eat, and spend time in our space daily – the space is a record of our life. Whether immaculate or messy, the condition of the room is a representation of the owner themselves, and what we do and enter with coheres as an empathic element of our chronological progress. The title of this solo exhibition, ‘Now & Now & Now,’ prompts the audience to infer about its hint; she
highlights the numerous ‘nows’ prescribed in her space. Schwaiger applies this lens through her art studio, conveying that her studio represents herself more than her body per se. As a full-time artist, every space of hers is imbued with art. Her artworks presented in the gallery are an array of scenes of her studio, distinct moments, spontaneously depicted in a spectrum of colors mostly in blue, green, and warm oranges. These colors harmonize with plantation elements that appear
often. This symbolism is consistent throughout her artworks and familiarizes the audience with the issue of climate crises, which she has portrayed in her past works and projects.

Amongst the impact the artwork has, her works confidently prove her strong technique of perspective and use of value. Most of her works show a mid-top view of perspective and involve reflective elements such as a mirror. These require great execution of complex vanishing points and symmetry. A perspective of an eye level of herself looking at her studio, this implementation drives the audience to absorb as if watching the actual room through her eyes. Furthermore, her view depicts a particular style of color. They are vibrant, textual, and translucent. Looking at her works up close, a shallow layer of timid, light shade is washed onto the canvas. Some spots are exposed with this wash, juxtaposed with parts that are heavily layered with paint. Somewhere in the middle, the wash serves as ambivalence and euphoria; the imperfection is significant. Every wash applied shows a different swatch that orients the piece’s theme. For her artistic progress, she uses watercolor, acrylic, and ink as her medium. These fast-drying materials enhance the effect of brushstrokes that leave on the surface of the canvas; the faster and more dynamic the motion, the stronger the texture arouses.

Relatively, a light perception it introduces; the artist and the gallery provide a pleasant aesthetic. An insightful leisure and outside of the weights we encounter, Elizabeth Schwaiger’s works are an egress from the dark, depressing colors we face in modern life. Her use of vibrant colors and whimsical imagery creates a sense of joy and playfulness, offering a refreshing escape from the monotony of everyday life. Through her art, Schwaiger invites viewers to explore a world filled with imagination and wonder, providing a much-needed break from the harsh realities of the world.
